How to clean a cat water fountain?
Partager
A poorly maintained fountain does more harm than good. Here's how to keep your cat's fountain clean, healthy, and effective.
Why you should clean your cat's fountain regularly
A water fountain continuously filters and renews water, but this doesn't mean it doesn't need maintenance. Over time, bacterial biofilms, limescale deposits, and hair residues accumulate on the walls, in the pump, and on the filters. A neglected fountain quickly becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to urinary or digestive infections in your cat.
The good news is that regular maintenance takes less than ten minutes and is enough to keep the water perfectly clean.
How often should you clean the fountain?
- Every 3 to 4 days: rinse the reservoir and basin with clear water, without full disassembly
- Once a week: complete cleaning with disassembly of all parts
- Every 3 months: change the activated carbon filter to maintain optimal filtration
These frequencies may vary depending on the number of cats, the hardness of your water, and the amount of hair your cat sheds. When in doubt, clean more often rather than less.
What you need to clean the fountain
- A soft brush or bottle brush for corners
- White vinegar to dissolve limescale
- Mild dish soap, without strong fragrance
- Lukewarm water
- A microfiber cloth
Absolutely avoid aggressive chemical products, bleach, or scented disinfectants. Even when thoroughly rinsed, their residues can be harmful to your cat.
Step-by-step complete cleaning
Step 1: unplug and disassemble
Always start by unplugging the fountain before any cleaning. Then disassemble all removable parts: the reservoir, the basin, the pump, the filter, and any other accessories. Consult your fountain's manual if you are unsure about disassembly.
Step 2: rinse all parts
Rinse each part with lukewarm water to remove visible residues. Do not put the activated carbon filter in hot water, as this would destroy its filtering properties.
Step 3: clean with white vinegar
To dissolve limescale deposits, pour undiluted white vinegar on the affected areas. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then gently scrub with a brush or bottle brush. White vinegar is natural, effective against limescale, and safe for your cat once rinsed.
Step 4: clean the pump
The pump is the most sensitive part. Disassemble it completely if possible and clean each part with a brush. The pump rotor often accumulates hair and deposits that reduce its efficiency. A thin bottle brush is ideal for reaching small corners.
Step 5: rinse thoroughly
Rinse all parts with clear water several times to remove any trace of vinegar or dish soap. Insufficient rinsing can leave a taste that will deter your cat from drinking.
Step 6: reassemble and plug in
Dry the parts with a microfiber cloth, reassemble the fountain, fill it with fresh water, and plug it back in. Check that the flow is normal and that the pump is not making any unusual noise.
When to change the filter?
The activated carbon filter is the heart of the filtration system. It absorbs impurities, chemical residues, and bad odors to keep the water fresh and pleasant. Over time, it saturates and loses its effectiveness.
As a general rule, change your filter every 3 months. This period can be reduced to 6 weeks if you have several cats or if your water is particularly hard.
A worn filter no longer filters anything and can even release the impurities it had absorbed. This is the most common sign of water starting to smell bad despite regular cleaning.
Our Liore replacement filters are compatible with all our fountains and can be changed in seconds. Each pack contains 8 filters, which is two years of use for a household with one cat.
Is the Liore fountain easy to clean?
All Liore fountains have been designed for maximum ease of maintenance. The parts can be disassembled without tools, the reservoir and basin are dishwasher safe, and the pump is accessible in seconds. 304 stainless steel does not accumulate bacteria in micro-scratches, unlike plastic, which significantly reduces the frequency of deep cleaning.

Mistakes to avoid
- Using boiling water: it can deform some plastic parts and destroys the filter's properties
- Forgetting the pump: this is often the most neglected part, yet the most important
- Not rinsing enough: cleaning product residues repel cats
- Waiting until the water smells bad: at this stage, bacteria are already well established
- Cleaning without unplugging: for safety, always unplug before touching the pump
