Cat water fountain: should it be left on at night?
Partager
You're wondering if you can turn off your cat's fountain at night to save electricity or avoid noise. The answer might surprise you.
Cats are nocturnal animals
Contrary to what many owners believe, cats are not diurnal animals that sleep at night like us. They are crepuscular and nocturnal animals, naturally active between sunset and sunrise. In the wild, they hunt, move around, and drink at night.
Your domestic cat has retained these deeply ingrained biological rhythms. They get up several times during the night, explore their territory, and drink. If the fountain is turned off at that time, they find themselves faced with stagnant, cold water, much less appealing than the fresh, moving water they were expecting.
What happens when you turn off the fountain at night
Water stagnates and warms up
A turned-off fountain is just an ordinary bowl of water. The water stops circulating, filtration stops, and the water temperature gradually rises to match that of the room. In summer, this can mean water at 25 degrees Celsius or more in the fountain in the morning. Few cats appreciate lukewarm, still water.
Your cat drinks less
If your cat gets up at night to drink and finds a turned-off fountain, they might decide not to drink rather than settling for stagnant water. This silent refusal, repeated night after night, contributes to progressive chronic dehydration, the effects of which will only be seen months or years later on their kidneys.
The pump wears out faster
Cat fountain pumps are designed to run continuously. Repeated stops and starts are technically more demanding on the motor than uninterrupted operation. Turning the pump off and on every day reduces its lifespan.
Power consumption: Is it really a problem?
This is often the primary reason given for wanting to turn off the fountain at night. The reality is reassuring: a cat fountain pump consumes between 2 and 5 watts. This is comparable to a low-consumption LED. Over an entire year, running 24/7, the electricity cost of a fountain is between 3 and 10 euros, depending on your tariff. That's less than one euro per month. It's not a sufficient reason to deprive your cat of fresh water at night.
What about noise at night?
If you're considering turning off the fountain at night due to noise, the problem comes from the fountain itself, not its nocturnal operation. A good cat fountain should operate at less than 30 dB, which is almost inaudible even in the silence of the night.
If your current fountain keeps you awake, it's a sign that you need to replace it with a model that has a quality submerged pump. Turning off the fountain is just a workaround that penalizes your cat.
Should you really never turn it off?
There are situations where temporarily turning off the fountain is acceptable:
- During cleaning: obviously, the fountain must be turned off for disassembly and washing
- For a very short absence: if you go out for a few hours and your cat has access to a bowl of water in addition
- When replacing the filter: a few minutes of downtime for the operation
In all other cases, a cat fountain is designed to operate continuously, 24/7. That's precisely why it exists.
