Silent Cat Water Fountain: Why Is It Essential?
Partager
Your cat gets up at night to drink. You also hear the pump. A silent fountain changes everything, for him and for you.
Noise, the enemy of your cat and your sleep
A noisy cat water fountain is a double-edged problem. First, for your cat: felines have extremely developed hearing, capable of perceiving frequencies far beyond what humans hear. A pump's hum that seems insignificant to you can be perceived as a real nuisance by your pet, to the point of deterring them from drinking.
Then, for you: a fountain placed in the living room, kitchen, or worse, the bedroom, quickly becomes unbearable if its pump emits a constant noise. As a result, you unplug it at night, depriving your cat of fresh water for several hours at a time.
What exactly is a silent fountain?
The noise level of a fountain depends almost entirely on its pump. There are two types of pumps:
External pumps
Placed outside the reservoir, they vibrate against the surface on which the fountain rests and amplify the noise. This is the cheapest system to produce but also the loudest. These pumps often emit between 40 and 60 dB, which is equivalent to a normal conversation.
Submerged pumps
Placed directly in the water, they are dampened by the surrounding liquid. The noise is absorbed before it even propagates. A good submerged pump operates between 20 and 35 dB, which is an almost inaudible level in a normal room.
All Liore fountains are equipped with submerged pumps operating at less than 30 dB. This is equivalent to a whisper or the sound of a page turning.
Why silence promotes your cat's hydration
A cat stressed by the noise of its fountain will develop a negative relationship with it. It approaches it cautiously, drinks quickly, and leaves. In the most extreme cases, some very noise-sensitive cats end up completely avoiding the fountain and returning to their stagnant water bowl, or worse, stop drinking enough.
Conversely, a silent fountain becomes a reassuring object in the cat's environment. It approaches naturally, at its own pace, and drinks longer and more frequently. Owners who switch from a noisy fountain to a silent fountain almost systematically observe a visible increase in their cat's water consumption.
Cats particularly sensitive to noise
All cats benefit from a silent fountain, but some absolutely need it:
- Anxious or fearful cats: any unusual noise is perceived as a potential threat. A noisy pump can trigger a permanent state of vigilance that exhausts the animal.
- Elderly cats: with age, some cats become hypersensitive to sound stimuli. A noisy fountain can exacerbate an existing anxious state.
- Cats who have experienced trauma: cats adopted from shelters or with a difficult past are often more reactive to noises.
- Kittens: during their socialization period, a calm environment promotes their serene development.
How to measure a fountain's sound level?
The decibel (dB) is the unit of sound measurement. Here are some benchmarks to understand what the numbers displayed by manufacturers mean:
| Sound level | Equivalent | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| 20 dB | Rustling leaves | Practically inaudible |
| 30 dB | Whisper | Almost inaudible |
| 40 dB | Quiet library | Perceptible in silence |
| 50 dB | Normal conversation | Annoying at night |
| 60 dB | Distant vacuum cleaner | Very annoying |
Liore fountains operate at less than 30 dB — in the almost inaudible range, day and night.
Other factors influencing a fountain's noise
The sound level of a fountain does not depend solely on its pump. Other elements come into play:
Water level
A fountain with a low water level makes more noise. Water falling into an almost empty reservoir creates an amplified splashing sound. Always keep your fountain filled to the manufacturer's recommended level.
Limescale in the pump
Over time, limescale deposits accumulate in the pump and cause it to vibrate abnormally. A scaled pump can become two to three times noisier than it was originally. Regular cleaning with white vinegar is enough to maintain silent operation.
The surface on which the fountain rests
A fountain placed on tile resonates more than on wood or carpet. Our Liore protective mat made of food-grade silicone absorbs vibrations in addition to protecting your floor.
Pump wear
Every pump eventually wears out and becomes noisier. If your fountain gradually becomes noisier despite regular maintenance, it's time to change the pump or the entire fountain.
Silent fountain and apartment: the perfect combo
In an apartment, the fountain is often placed in a common living space. The silence of the pump is not a luxury but a necessity to maintain a serene atmosphere, day and night. This is especially true if you have a cat that drinks at night, which is very common in felines that are naturally more active at dusk and dawn.
A silent fountain allows you to place it anywhere in your apartment without constraints: living room, kitchen, hallway, or even bedroom if your cat sleeps there with you.
