Cat water fountain: where should you put it in your home?

The placement of the fountain is often overlooked. Yet, it's one of the most important factors for your cat to truly adopt it and drink enough daily.

Why is the fountain's placement crucial?

You've just installed a water fountain for your cat, and they're not going near it. Before questioning the product, consider where you've placed it. In most cases, a cat that snubs their fountain isn't snubbing the fountain itself, but its location.

Cats are animals with very precise instincts when it comes to hydration. In nature, they avoid drinking near their prey or resting areas to limit the risk of contamination. These ancestral behaviors persist in domestic cats and directly influence their drinking habits at home.

The golden rules for placing the fountain well

Away from food bowls and litter boxes

This is the most important rule. Never place the fountain next to the kibble bowl or near the litter box. In nature, a water source near food or waste is instinctively associated with a risk of contamination. Your cat avoids it for this reason, even unconsciously.

The ideal distance between the fountain and the food bowl is at least one meter. For the litter box, move the fountain an entire room away if possible.

In a calm but accessible area

Your cat should be able to access their fountain peacefully, without being disturbed by people passing by, noise, or other animals. Avoid busy hallways, areas near the washing machine or oven, as the noise and vibrations can deter them from approaching.

At the same time, the fountain should not be hidden in an inaccessible corner. Your cat needs to see it easily from their usual living areas to remember to drink regularly.

Multiple water sources in the house

If you have an apartment or a house with several rooms, install multiple water sources. Cats drink more easily when water access is available in different places. A water point in the living room, another in the bedroom or hallway: this simple arrangement can significantly increase your cat's daily water intake.

Our 2.2L compact fountain is ideal as a secondary water point thanks to its small footprint. It discreetly fits into any room without taking up space.

At a comfortable height

Place the fountain on the floor, on a stable and flat surface. Avoid raised surfaces like countertops or shelves: a cat that has to jump to access its water will drink less often, especially as it ages. Elderly cats or those with joint problems particularly need easy access at ground level.

Our silicone protective mat is designed to stabilize the fountain and protect your floor from any splashes. It also prevents the fountain from slipping if your cat pushes on it.

Away from heat sources

Avoid placing the fountain near a radiator, a window exposed to the sun, or an appliance that gives off heat. Warm water loses its appeal for cats and can promote bacterial growth. Cool water is water your cat will want to drink.

Places to absolutely avoid

Location Why to avoid it
Next to the food bowl Contamination instinct, the cat avoids it
Near the litter box Association with waste, prohibitive
Hallway or high-traffic area Too much noise and agitation
Near a radiator or sunny window Water warms up and loses its appeal
In a hidden or inaccessible corner The cat forgets to drink

My cat still doesn't go near the fountain: what to do?

If, despite good placement, your cat ignores the fountain, here are some tips to encourage them to take an interest.

Gradually move the fountain to a place they naturally frequent, where they usually sleep or play. Dip your finger in the running water and let them lick it: the movement of the water and your reassuring presence can break the initial distrust. You can also place a few kibbles near the fountain for the first few days to attract them to the area, then remove them once they're used to approaching.

Patience is essential. Some cats adopt the fountain in a few hours, others take several weeks. Never force contact and let them discover it at their own pace.
